How to Pick an Anime Name for Your OC
A practical 6-step method for naming your anime OC. Works whether you're writing fanfic, building a VTuber persona, naming a Discord handle, or just want a name that fits your character. No fluff — just a simple process you can follow yourself.
Most OC name lists give you a thousand random names and call it a day. That's not what you want. You want your character to have a name that fits them. The way to get there is a short, repeatable method — pick the character first, then let the name follow.
Decide the OC's gender (or skip it)
Most OCs have a gender. Some don't. Japanese given names are gender-marked by tradition —
haruto (陽翔) is read as masculine, himari (陽葵) is feminine. If gender
doesn't matter for your character, use the gender-neutral set instead: akira
(明, bright), sora (空, sky), nagi (凪, calm).
Decide the OC's era
Is your character modern-day, historical, fantasy, or sci-fi? The era changes what kind of name fits. A samurai-era OC wants yamato (大和) or asahi (朝陽) — a "great harmony" or "morning sun" name. A modern OC can take ren (蓮, lotus) or yuma (悠真) without anyone blinking. Sci-fi or fantasy OCs often want something that sounds Japanese without being a real person's name — that's where the Mythology tab comes in.
• Modern → IRL Names (male/female/neutral)
• Historical / feudal → IRL Names (male) or Mythology → figures
• Fantasy / mythological → Mythology → figures (yokai, deities, shrines)
• Sci-fi / cyberpunk → Mythology → martial (kengo, kensei, daimyo)
Pick a vibe, not just a meaning
Two characters can both be "strong" but in different ways. One is dignified
(rin 凛, "dignified, cold-crisp"), the other is epic
(amaterasu 天照, the sun goddess). Don't pick a name by meaning alone —
pick by feel. The anime site's data is hand-curated with vibe tags for this reason.
Six common vibes for anime OCs:
- Cute —
himari陽葵,koharu心春,usagi兎 (rabbit) - Cool —
kengo剣豪,kitsune狐 (fox) - Dark / mysterious —
tsukuyomi月読 (moon god),komainu狛犬 - Strong / epic —
yamato大和,orochi大蛇 (eight-headed serpent) - Elegant —
suzu鈴 (bell),akari明里 - Vocab-as-name —
midori緑 (green),sora空 (sky)
Choose a format
Now decide how the name should be shaped:
- Standalone — just a Japanese given name (or a mythological name). Clean. Best for: any era, any genre. The default for OCs.
-
Paired — a mythology name + a real given name (e.g.,
Inari Sakura,Fujin Hinata). Best for: shrine maiden OCs, deity OCs, names that hint at a story. - Fusion — pair your own word with a Japanese word. ShadowKitsune, StarYuki, WolfTsukuyomi. CamelCase, spaced, hyphenated, underscored, lowercase, or piped — your pick. Best for: handles, usernames, fan-persona names.
-
Cute — Japanese animal/nature words with cute suffixes (
-chan,-maru,-pon). E.g.,UsagiMaru,KitsuneChan. Best for: pet names, mascot handles, kawaii OCs.
Test the name out loud
Before you commit, say the name out loud five times. Count how it sounds at:
- Fast — when your friend says "follow my OC @ ___" quickly. Does it survive?
- Across a noisy room — would someone hear it on Discord or in a TikTok comment?
- In anger / sadness — would the name still work if the character is yelling or crying?
- To a 5-year-old — can they say it without stumbling? (
Tsukuyomican trip up non-Japanese speakers; short names likeSoraorRinpass easily.)
If it fails any of these, regenerate. Don't get attached until it survives the read-aloud test.
Save 3–5 finalists, then pick one
Don't pick from a single generated batch. Save 3–5 names you like (the generator has a ⭐ Save button on every result), then go away for an hour. Come back, re-read them. The one that still feels right is your answer.
FAQ
Is it OK to use a real Japanese person's name for a character?
Yes, with one rule of thumb: don't use a famous real person's name (a living
celebrity, a recent political figure, a known historical person). For everyday real names
(which is what the IRL Names tab pulls from — these are entries in Japanese baby-name
registries), it's fine. Common names like Haruto and Himari are shared by many real people, so using one for a character doesn't point to any particular person.
The names carry meaning, not identity.
What if my OC is genderfluid / non-binary?
Use the gender-neutral filter. Real Japanese names like Sora,
Hikari, Akira, Nagi work for any gender. The
Mythology tab is also good for this — Suzaku, Fujin,
Tsukuyomi don't have an inherent gender.
My OC has multiple names (first + last). What now?
Pick the given name with the IRL Names tab, then pair it with a real surname from the
Surnames data (the generator's IRL Names section does this automatically). The most common
Japanese surnames are Sato, Suzuki, Takahashi,
Tanaka, Watanabe — all real, all usable.
Should I use kanji or hiragana?
Either. Kanji (陽翔) looks more "real name" and reads more visually striking.
Hiragana (はると) reads softer and is common for nicknames / younger characters.
The name works either way — kanji and hiragana are different writings of the same name.
